Nitrogen is unlikely to consistently limit primary productivity in most tropical lakes

چکیده

Despite mounting evidence that tropical lakes may experience an array of phytoplankton nutrient limitation regimes, references to low-latitude being predominantly nitrogen limited remain common in the literature. To assess current understanding regimes lakes, we performed a literature review with following objectives: First, quantify and summarize observations (N), phosphorus (P), colimitation collected studies. Second, identify drivers regimes. Third, provide literature-informed recommendations for future research efforts into lakes. We report not only is N dominant limiting reviewed but exhibit wide range there often considerable heterogeneity within individual lake. This driven largely by seasonal patterns water column stratification precipitation, land use cover (LULC), interaction these system characteristics lake morphology. accurately characterize aquatic ecosystems, assessments need include sampling across space time order capture within-lake spatial both inter- intra-annual temporal variation. Whenever possible, inferential experimental approaches should be used concert determine due methodological limitations.

The most unlikely places.

For me humor has always been the saving grace of the human condition and I always look for humor in the most unlikely places. I will never forget telling Joan Steitz and several others at a meeting when they were planning to have an RNA Society and Journal, “How can you have a Society based on a 2′ hydroxyl?”Well fortunately they did not take my advice and so was born the RNA journal. Its birth...

A direct test of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation to net primary productivity in a lowland tropical wet forest.

Experimental evidence for limitation of net primary productivity (NPP) by nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) in lowland tropical forests is rare, and the results from the few existing studies have been inconclusive. To directly test if N or P limit NPP in a lowland tropical wet forest in Costa Rica, we conducted a full factorial fertilization experiment (4 treatments x 6 replicates in 30 x 30 m plo...

The allocation of ecosystem net primary productivity in tropical forests.

The allocation of the net primary productivity (NPP) of an ecosystem between canopy, woody tissue and fine roots is an important descriptor of the functioning of that ecosystem, and an important feature to correctly represent in terrestrial ecosystem models. Here, we collate and analyse a global dataset of NPP allocation in tropical forests, and compare this with the representation of NPP alloc...

Primary Productivity in a Nutrient-Limited Tropical EstuaryI

The results of a survey of phytoplankton productivity, chlorophyll a and nutrient concentrations in Pala Lagoon, American Samoa, are shown to be interpretable in terms of two regimes: an ocean-dominated region where productivity is controlled by fix~d nitrogen concentrations, and a land-runoff-dominated regime where productivity is unrelated to major nutrient concentration. A quantitative relat...
